Pioneering missions that emanate from a profound vision!

The Madhya Kerala Diocese of Church of South India (C.S.I.) instigates her missional and theological perception through the Word of God since her inception in 1879 (then the Anglican Diocese of Cochin & Travancore). When the Church of South India was inaugurated on 27 September 1947, it was acclaimed as the most significant event in the Church Union Movement, as four different church traditions (Anglican, Congregational, Presbyterian& Methodist) had been brought together in C.S.I. Eventually, the Madhya Kerala Diocese initiated the pioneering task of Evangelization as Rev. K.E. Eappen Achen was sent as the pioneer missionary to the diocese’s first mission field, Parkal Mission in 1924, where the underdeveloped, downtrodden and socially backward classes existed. Henceforth, the missional journey of the Diocese focuses to reach the unreached of the society. The C.S.I. MYSORE MISSION was envisaged in 1995, by the then Bishop of the Diocese Rt. Rev.Dr. Sam Mathew and the diocesan officials as the Mission Field of Diocesan Women’s Fellowship. Rev. Kurian Mathew Achen (then a Lay Missionary) and his wife Dr. Ruby Kurian Kochamma were the chosen and sent as the first missionary couple to Mysore Mission.

It all began one hot summer day in 1996!

As Rev. Kurian Mathew Achen first stepped into his assigned destination, one hot summer day in 1995, his eyes were greeted by a brown landscape with vast agricultural fields, stretching up to the horizon. The fields lay parched under a scorching summer sun and the village was inhabited by an illiterate and impoverished agrarian populace.

The place was H.D. KOTE TALUK of Mysuru District in Karnataka, where he was sent on a noble errand of evangelism, entrusted to him by the Madhya Kerala Diocese of Church of South India. It was God’s divine intention that he was to spread the imperishable Word of God. After a series of social mapping with the help of Rev. Johnson Paul (Presbyter, CSI Karnataka Southern Diocese) and Sr. Leela John, it was God’s providence for the Diocese to own a land at HAMPAPURA Village of H.D. KoteTaluk. There begins the tale of C.S.I. MYSORE MISSION.

Goals to realize; challenges to face!

The spiritual awakening of the marginalized through evangelism and education was the goal. But the spiritual awakening of a society necessarily implies its holistic development as well. In a village reigned by feudal lords where religious sectarianism and social discrimination prevailed in extreme form, it was a difficult task.

Envisions a total revival in all areas!

All the missionaries who served there have played substantial roles in the development process of the Mission. While evangelism remained the prime, engrossing activity, sustained efforts to promote the holistic development of society in all concerned areas, i.e., ethical, spiritual, educational and intellectual, were also in full swing. The school was founded in 1997. Mukti, the women empowerment program got started. Medical camps, in association with Mysore Mission Hospital, were conducted. Generous helps were provided for the marriages of the poor. Sunday moral classes were on. The chapel was constructed at the mission compound. A few natives were christened into God’s love, at their own will.
